Guide to Wireless Networking

1. Speed - Wireless networking is significantly slower than wired networks. The most popular wireless standard currently in use is 802.11g. This standard allows for 54 Mbs (Mega bits per second) of data. Like all advertised specifications, this is fastest possible burst of data under ideal conditions. Realistically, you can expect speeds of 13-20 Mbs. The upcoming industry standard of 802.11n allows for an advertised speed of up to 300 Mbs, translating to about 40 Mbits of actual throughput.


By comparison, the trusty Ethernet wired standard we all grew up with allows speeds of up to 1000 Mbs. What's more, wired ethernet supports full duplex operation, meaning that you can actually get up to 2000 Mbs out of a standard wired network. This means that wireless b is 50-100 times slower than a wired network.
Many manufacturers have developed proprietary standards that will give you faster speeds and longer range. The problem with these is that you would need to purchase all of your networking equipment from the same manufacturer. Even equipment purchased from the same manufacturer but at different times is not guaranteed to be compatible at the extended speeds.

With all of that said, the 54 Mbps provided by 802.11g networks is usually more than enough speed for home networks. With most cable internet connections in the range of 1.5 - 15 Mbps, the wireless g standard should provide plenty of speed for surfing the net. It really doesn't take much bandwidth to surf the web or read email, and many people never notice the speed difference of their wireless network from a wired one.

2. Radio interference - Certain types of strong radio signals could interfere with your network. Some common types of interference are cordless phones, microwaves, and ham radios. This type of interference is becoming less and less of a problem as routers improve and cordless phones move to other frequencies, but it is still something you may have to deal with.

3. Distance - Your signal quality (and the speed of your wireless connection) will decrease as you get farther from your router. While wired ethernet allows a wire to go up to 100 meters before the signal must repeated, a typical wireless connection only goes about 30 meters indoors. This can be improved with range extenders or specially built routers. More on that later.

4. Security - Wireless security was the inspiration for this article. Since your network is being broadcast as radio signal in all directions, anyone within range can tune in. The neighbors next door or even people driving down the street with lap-tops will be able to connect to your network, access your files, and use your internet connection. I will show you steps you can take to lock down your wireless network to keep unwanted visitors out, but there will always be risks.

Speed Rate Wi-Fi

WiFi networking standards including 802.11b and 802.11g advertise a maximum data rate (connection speed) like 11 Mbps or 54 Mbps. However, sometimes the data rate of a live WiFi connection (as displayed in the configuration utilities) differs from these values.

This behavior is called dynamic rate scaling, a design feature of WiFi networks. When a computer is connected via WiFi, the network data rate is set and changes automatically as the quality of the wireless signal changes. Dynamic rate scaling extends the range at which wireless devices can connect to each other.

WiFi Problem

For example, an 802.11b WiFi computer in close proximity to a router will often connect at 11 Mbps as shown on the computer's wireless configuration screens. If the computer is moved further away from the router, the connection speed will automatically reduce from 11 Mbps to 5.5 Mbps, and sometimes lower.

Were this device to maintain a 11 Mbps connection across too far of a distance, the connection would fail and drop. WiFi devices scale their data rate in defined increments.

On 802.11b, the possible choices for data rate are:

* 11 Mbps
* 5.5 Mbps
* 2 Mbps
* 1 Mbps

Similarly, the possible data rates for 802.11g devices are:

* 54 Mbps
* 48 Mbps
* 36 Mbps
* 24 Mbps
* 18 Mbps
* 12 Mbps
* 9 Mbps
* 6 Mbps

Factors that determine which dynamic data rate is chosen for a WiFi device at any given time are:

* distance between the device and other WiFi communication endpoints
* radio interference in the path of the WiFi device
* physical obstructions in the path of the WiFi device, that also interfere with signal quality
* the power of the device's WiFi radio transmitter/receiver

Home WiFi equipment always uses the dynamic data rate scaling feature;
a network administrator cannot disable it.

How to setup ad-hoc wireless network (peer to peer)?

Since there really isn't anything saying exactly how to do this, I decided to summarize into a thread. If there is anything more to be added, feel free to reply.
1. You will need one wireless network card for each computer
2. Go into the network card properties and set the SSID to something unique. Make sure to set the SSID to the same value on each machine. If you don't, the network will not work properly.
3. Go into the network card properties and set a channel for the wireless network to use. Make sure you set the channel to the same number on each machine. If you don't have the same value set, the network will not work.
4. Set a static LAN IP on both computers. Be sure to put them on the same subnet and in the same IP range. Ex. If you set the IP on one machine to 192.168.1.1, be sure to set the other machine to something inside that same range (192.168.1.2-254). 5. Set the network cards to run in "ad-hoc" mode, instead of infrastructure.
If you don't want to share your internet connection, this should get you up-and-running.
If you do want to share your internet connection, follow these steps:

1. Enable "ICS" on the network connection which has internet connectivity. Write down this computers IP address, since it will be the "host" computer. If you are not running Windows, or don't have the option to run ICS, consult Google,or this forum, for other connection sharing options.
2. Set the default gateway of the network card on the second computer to the host computers IP address.
3. Set the DNS servers for the network card on the second computer to values given to you by your ISP, or ones which you know work.

Also, keep in mind, when sharing your internet connection over an ad-hoc network, the host computer must be on, and connected to the internet, if you want the second machine to be able to access the internet.

To test connectivity:
1. Go to Start.
2. Go to Run.
3. Type "cmd".
4. Type "ping x.x.x.x", where x.x.x.x is the IP of one of the machines in the network.
5. If the ping is successful, your network is up and you should have full connectivity

Setup Wireless Internet In Windows XP

Windows XP (either Professional or Home Edition) allows you to establish a wireless network connection to Wi-Fi network routers and access points automatically. This feature helps you to make wireless Internet / Wi-Fi network connections more easily with laptop computers and is highly recommended for those who roam between multiple locations.
Does My Computer Support Automatic Wireless Network Configuration?
Not all Windows XP computers with Wi-Fi wireless support are capable of automatic wireless configuration. To verify your Windows XP computer supports this feature, you must access its Wireless Network Connection properties:
1. From the Start Menu, open Windows Control Panel.
2. Inside Control Panel, click the "Network Connections" option if it exists, otherwise first click "Network and Internet Connections" and then click "Network Connections."
3. Finally, right-click "Wireless Network Connection" and choose "Properties."
In the Wireless Network Connection properties window, do you see a "Wireless Networks" tab? If not, your Wi-Fi network adapter lacks so-called Windows Zero Configuration (WZC) support, and the built-in Windows XP automatic wireless configuration feature will remain unavailable to you. Replace your wireless network adapter if necessary to enable this feature.

If you see a "Wireless Networks" tab, click it, and then (in Windows XP SP2) click the "View Wireless Networks" button appearing on that page. A message may appear on the screen as follows:

"Windows cannot configure this wireless connection. If you have enabled another program to configure this wireless connection, use that software… ."

This message appears when your wireless network adapter was installed with a software configuration utility separate from Windows XP. The Windows XP automatic configuration feature cannot be used in this situation unless the adapter's own configuration utility is disabled, which is generally not advisable.

Enable and Disable Automatic Wireless Network Configuration

To enable automatic configuration, ensure the "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings" checkbox is checked on the Wireless Networks tab of the Wireless Network Connection properties window. Automatic wireless Internet / Wi-Fi network configuration will be disabled if this checkbox is unchecked. You must be logged on with Windows XP administrative privileges to enable / disable this feature.

What Are Available Networks?

The Wireless Networks tab allows you to access the set of "Available" networks. Available networks represent those active networks currently detected by Windows XP. Some Wi-Fi networks may be active and in range but not appear under Available networks. This occurs when a wireless router or access point has SSID broadcast disabled.

Whenever your network adapter detects newly available Wi-Fi networks, you will see an alert in the lower-right corner of the screen allowing you to take action if necessary.

What Are Preferred Networks?

In the Wireless Networks tab, you can build a set of so-called "Preferred" networks when automatic wireless configuration is active. This list represents a set of known Wi-Fi routers or access points you wish to automatically connect to in future. You can "Add" new networks to this list by specifying the network name (SSID) and appropriate security settings of each.

The order Preferred networks are listed here determines the order that Windows XP will automatically attempt when seeking to make a wireless / Internet connection. You can set this order to your preference, with the limitation that all infrastructure mode networks must appear ahead of all ad hoc mode networks in the Preferred list.

The benefits of networking (either wired or wireless) in home

* file sharing - Network file sharing between computers gives you more flexibity than using floppy drives or Zip drives. Not only can you share photos, music files, and documents, you can also use a home network to save copies of all of your important data on a different computer. Backups are one of the most critical yet overlooked tasks in home networking.
* printer / peripheral sharing - Once a home network is in place, it's easy to then set up all of the computers to share a single printer. No longer will you need to bounce from one system or another just to print out an email message. Other computer peripherals can be shared similarly such as network scanners, Web cams, and CD burners.
* Internet connection sharing - Using a home network, multiple family members can access the Internet simultaneously without having to pay an ISP for multiple accounts. You will notice the Internet connection slows down when several people share it, but broadband Internet can handle the extra load with little trouble. Sharing dial-up Internet connections works, too. Painfully slow sometimes, you will still appreciate having shared dial-up on those occasions you really need it.
* multi-player games - Many popular home computer games support LAN mode where friends and family can play together, if they have their computers networked.
* Internet telephone service - So-called Voice over IP (VoIP) services allow you to make and receive phone calls through your home network across the Internet, saving you money.
* home entertainment - Newer home entertainment products such as digital video recorders (DVRs) and video game consoles now support either wired or wireless home networking. Having these products integrated into your network enables online Internet gaming, video sharing and other advanced features.
Although you can realize these same benefits with a wired home network, you should carefully consider building a wireless home network instead, for the following reasons:

1. Computer mobility. Notebook computers and other portable devices are much affordable than they were a few years ago. With a mobile computer and wireless home network, you aren't chained to a network cord and can work on the couch, on your porch, or wherever in the house is most convenient at the moment.

2. No unsightly wires. Businesses can afford to lay cable under their floors or inside walls. But most of us don't have the time or inclination to fuss with this in our home. Unless you own one of the few newer homes pre-wired with network cable, you'll save substantial time and energy avoiding the cabling mess and going wireless.

3. Wireless is the future. Wireless technology is clearly the future of networking. In building a wireless home network, you'll learn about the technology and be able to teach your friends and relatives. You'll also be better prepared for future advances in network technology coming in the future.

How to connect to Wi-Fi

Syarat dan ketentuan bagi para klien yang ingin mendapatkan akses hotspot yang pertama harus masih dalam coverage area yang berkisar kurang lebih 2 kilometer dari pusat pemancar.

Kedua syarat klien adalah berada pada posisi CLOS (clear line of sight) yang artinya tidak terhalang apapun yang dapat menyebabkan sinyal atau gelombang wireless tertutupi atau tabrakan yang disebabkan oleh di dinding tembok bangunan atau pepohonan.
Solusi dari hal ini adalah dengan memasang tower/tiang untuk meminimalisir halangan hingga komunikasi lebih lancar.

Ketiga syarat klien adalah tidak adanya interferensi pada antenna penerima yang disebabkan oleh Tumpang tindihnya signal wifi. Hal ini bisa diminimalisir dengan cara merubah polarisasi atau bentuk gelombang dari wireless yang terdiri dari 4 jenis polarisasi yaitu vertikal, horizontal, 45 derajat keatas, dan 45 derajat kebawah. Dan pastikan bahwa wireless anda berada pada mode infrastruktur.
